SECTION ONE: PRELIMINARY INFORMATION |
CHAPTER [1]: WHAT IS CHEXQUEST? |
ChexQuest is a non-violent, three-dimensional, virtual-reality-type action game created by Chex, Inc, and based on the DOOM gaming engine. The fully rendered intro animation will give you a full background on your mission. Here is a short explanation of the perils of ChexQuest. |
In ChexQuest, you're Chexter, a member of the Chex Squadron. You have volunteered to fly to the caverns of Bazoik and attempt a rescue of the citizens being held captive by the evil Flemoids. Unfortunately, conventional weapons are useless against the Flemoids. Your only defense is to use various zorchers to zap the evil cereal-eating creatures back to their own dimension. |
ENEMIES |
There are a variety of Flemoids in ChexQuest. Here is a list: |
FLEMIODUS COMMONUS (slimy ball of goo with no arms or legs): These Flemoids are wandering aimlessly about, looking to slime you with their noses. |
FLEMIODUS BIPEDICUS (slimy biped with floppy arms): Since these Flemoids can slime you with their arms and noses all at once, they will take away more health. |
FLEMIODUS BIPEDICUS w/ ARMOR (walking armored Flemoid): These Flemoids came to our world wearing armor that make them harder to zorch. These enemies also can throw slime balls a long way so watch out! |
FLEMOIDUS CYCLOPTUS (floating bubble with cyber arms): These Flemoids are tough customers. Their floating bubble armor makes them tough to zorch and they can dish out a lot of slime when they get close. |
ZORCHERS |
Here's a list of zorchers that are in ChexQuest. (Don't try using these at home.): |

SECTION TWO: HELPFUL HINTS |
CHAPTER [5]: HINTS AND TIPS FOR USING CHEXQUEST |
[5-1]: When should I use each zorcher? |
BOOT SPOON: This is your last resort and not very effective. It can be replaced with the SUPER BOOT SPORK. |
SUPER BOOT SPORK: Just run right up and zorch them. Remember that you have to get right next to them. |
MINI-ZORCHER: Your basic zorcher, it'll take a few zorches to transport most of the Flemoids. Try to find something better. |
LARGE ZORCHER: This is a good all-around zorcher. It zaps out a lot of zorch energy. Its only problem is that its rapid fire is not very fast. Very useful in "mazes" where Flemoids are very close but not in large amounts. |
RAPID ZORCHER: This zorcher takes a fair amount of time to zorch enemies. It's helpful if you see a large group of Flemoids. |
ZORCH PROPULSOR: This zorcher will create zorch gateways that can send many Flemoids back in one shot. Careful, though, the technology is still flawed. If you get too close to the gateway, your proximity to the Flemoid's slimy dimension will take away same of your health. |
PHASING ZORCHER: This zorcher emits a huge stream of phasing zorch energy. It can clear an area of Flemoids in a hurry. Careful, The energy is erratic. Your view may become obstructed. |
LARGE-AREA ZORCHING (LAZ) DEVICE: This most effective zorcher zorchs almost ANY
Flemoid in one shot but uses a lot of phasing zorch recharges and takes some time to recharge. |

[5-5]: How many zorches does it take to transfer each enemy back to its own dimension? |
Here is a chart that shows the amount of each kind of ammunition it takes to zorch Flemoids. This chart pertains to Gobs of Goo mode. |
Gobs of Goo Mode |
Monster | MINI | LRG | PROP | PHAS | LAZ |
Player | 10 | 2 | ~2 | 5 | 1 |
Fl. Commonus | 2 | 1 | 1 | 1 | 1 |
Fl. Bipedicus | 3 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 1 |
Fl. Bipedicus w/armor | 6 | 1 | 1 | 3 | 1 |
Fl. Cycloptis | 14 | 2 | 1 | 7 | 1 |
Note: This chart pertains to direct zorches only. Missed zorches increase the amount of energy required to send Flemoids back to their own world. |
+: This regards a player at 100% health. Again, missed zorches increase the amount. |

SECTION THREE: TROUBLESHOOTING |
CHAPTER [6]: WHY WON'T CHEXQUEST WORK CORRECTLY? |
This chapter helps you if you cannot get the game to function as it should. |
[6-1]: How can I use SMARTDRV.EXE with ChexQuest? |
Some people have been complaining about problems with ChexQuest and SMARTDRV.EXE. ChexQuest is not completely compatible with SMARTDRV.EXE, but here is how you can get it to work. Try putting the following command in your CONFIG.SYS (This will not work in the AUTOEXEC.BAT): |
DEVICE=C:\DOS\SMARTDRV. EXE DOUBLE_BUFFER |
The double buffering uses memory differently than the normal SMARTDRV.EXE commands. This command will take up 2k of conventional RAM and cannot be loaded into high memory. Similar tests have been performed on two machines that did not work with SMARTDRV.EXE, and this corrected the problem. |
Back to Menu |
[6-2]: Why am I getting an "OUT OF MEMORY" error with ChexQuest? |
If you are receiving an "OUT OF MEMORY" error when attempting to run ChexQuest, you might want to attempt any of the following: |
1) ChexQuest requires at least 4mb of RAM. Check to make sure you have at least this amount. |
2) If you are using MS-DOS v6.xx, try holding down the LEFT SHIFT key during bootup. This will stop all your TSRs from loading. Remember to reinstall your mouse driver, however. |
3) If you are using MS-DOS v5.0, rename your AUTOEXEC.BAT to stop all your TSRs from booting. |
4) If you are using MS-DOS v6.xx, try running MEMMAKER to free up more RAM at bootup time. |
5) If you are using MS-DOS v6.xx, create a boot menu. For details on creating a boot menu, type "HELP MENUITEM" at your MS-DOS prompt. |
6) Try running ChexQuest without using HIMEM and EMM386. If you are using a different memory manager, try removing it Instead. |
Back To Menu |
[6-3]: Why does ChexQuest crash when I start it (especially Win 3.1x)? |
Your motherboard may not be compatible with the DOS extender that ChexQuest uses. Try running ChexQuest with one of the DOS extenders in the file "altdoom.zip." |
If you are operating under Window 3.1x, the game may hang up while loading (usually after StartTimer). Try running the game under DOS by typing "chex" at the command prompt. For instance, if ChexQuest is loaded onto your C drive then it will look like this: C:\chex. |
If you still have troubles, you may be low on memory. Consult [6-2] above. |
Back to Menu |
[6-4]: How can I run ChexQuest under OS/2? |
Here is a list of settings that many DOOM users have been able to use to allow DOOM to work with OS/2. These may or may not work with ChexQuest, but it's worth a try. |
DOS_BACKGROUND_EXECUTION OFF |
DOS_BREAK OFF |

CHAPTER [7]: WHY WON'T MY SOUND CARD WORK WITH CHEXQUEST? |
This chapter helps fix problems with various sound cards in ChexQuest. |
[7-l]: Why won't my Sound Blaster Pro work with ChexQuest? |
If you are using an older graphics card that supports HiColor (16 bit graphics) you may have trouble getting this to work correctly. |
ChexQuest may not allow usage on IRQ 10. |
Back to Menu |
[7-2]: Why won't my Gravis UltraSound work with ChexQuest? |
To get ChexQuest to run properly with both music and digitized sound effects on the Gravis UltraSound, use these three steps. |
/////SOUND///// |
l) Set your ULTRASND environment variable, and use GFl IRQ less than 8 |
Example: SET ULTRASND=220,1,1,7,5 |
GF1 IRQ |
/////MUSIC///// |
2) ChexQuest requires that you have installed the General MIDI patch set from the 2.06a Install Disks (or later) that came with your UltraSound (and are also available via FTP and BBS). ChexQuest will find your patches (using the ULTRADIR variable) in the MIDI subdirectory pointed to by ULTRADIR. |
Example: SET ULTRADIR=C:\ULTRASND |
(ChexQuest will look in C:\ULTRASND\MIDI for the patches.) |
/////SETUP///// |
Run the SETUP program in the ChexQuest directory and select the UltraSound for both sfx and music. Now run ChexQuest! |
Back to Menu |
[7-3]: Why won't my Pro Audio Spectrum 16 work with ChexQuest? |
If the game is locking up after the "HU Init" line, there is a solution. Make sure you are loading your PAS MVPRODD.SYS driver low. Loading it high can cause Chex Quest to lock up. |
Back to Menu |
[7-4]: Why won't my ATT Stereo-F/X work with ChexQuest ? |
Turning off DMA buffering in the sound card's SFX.EXE configuration program should fix this problem. |

CHAPTER [8]: MISCELLANEOUS CHEXQUEST PROBLEMS |
[8-l]: Why won't my mouse work with ChexQuest? |
[8-1-1]: Why does my mouse start moving itself during play? |
If you have this problem, try playing with the keyboard or joystick with the mouse unplugged. ChexQuest has a bug that causes it to do strange things at times. |
Back to Menu |
[8-1-2]: Why won't my two-button mouse work with ChexQuest? |
ChexQuest's SETUP.EXE program assumes that you have a three-button mouse. The left button is "fire," the right button is "forward" and the center button is "sidestep." If you run the setup program that comes with ChexQuest, you can assign "sidestep" to the right mouse button, and the setting for "Move Forward" then appears to be blank. In actuality, "Move Forward" is set to be permanently
"on." This can be fixed easily. Edit the file "DEFAULT.CFG" in your ChexQuest directory with any text editor. The three lines of interest are: mouseb_fire, mauseb_strafe and mouseb_forward. The settings for these are 0 (left button), l (middle button) and 2 (right button}. When you ran the setup program, mouseb_forward was assigned a value of -1. Go ahead and change this to "1" save
the file and restart ChexQuest. The final entries should appear as: |
mouseb_fire 0 |
mouseb_strafe 2 |
mouseb_forward 1 |
This will allow you to shoot with the left button and sidestep with the right button. |
Back to Menu |
[8-1-3]: Why won't my IBM PS/2 mouse work with ChexQuest? |
The IBM PS/2 mouse does not seem to work well with ChexQuest. The only current solution that has been discovered is to load ChexQuest under Windows. Doing this allows the mouse to work perfectly. |

[8-2]: ChexQuest is too easy. |
If you find ChexQuest too easy, here are some suggestions: |
l) Play on a harder difficulty level. |
2) Only save your game at the beginning of each level. |
3) Never save your game and try completing the mission. |
4) Only use the Super BootSpork and small zorcher for the entire game. |
5) Turn down your screen contrast so you can see less. |
Back to Menu |
[8-3]: ChexQuest is too hard. |
If you find ChexQuest too hard, here are some suggestions: |
l) Play on an easier difficulty level. |
2) Save your game often. |
3) Turn up your screen contrast so you can see more. |
4) Press F11 during game play for gamma correction. |

[8-4]: I get motion sickness when playing ChexQuest. |
There has been a lot of discussion about this phenomenon. In short, some people experience dizziness attributed to the game movement. There are many theories, most along the line of motion sickness. Some also say that the animation is too smooth so it fools your brain into believing it to be real. Others say it's too jerky. Another popular theory is that lack of proper acceleration (like on-off
high speed) attributes to the nausea. I will not go into discussion of why. Instead, I will list some suggestions. Remedies are not guaranteed to work. There are many; all are experimental, and some will have opposite effects on different people. This, it seems, is a very individual problem. |
1) Try different display sizes. Either use different size monitors or use the screen size option to vary the display window. |
2) Try sitting closer/further from the display (don't sit TOO close). Try combining this with focusing/defocusing on the display or surroundings. This is to see if you are aware that you are looking at the monitor, and hopefully it may convince your brain that what you play is not really real. |
3) Try different machine speeds. If you have a turbo switch, try playing with it on/off. |
4) Try different input devices. With a mouse you can control acceleration more accurately than with a joystick or the keyboard. |
5) Play on your friend's/colleague's computer. See if it is better/worse. |
6) Have breaks while you play. Play in turns. Watch others play and then play yourself. |
7) If you have sound card, try playing with/without the sound. If your sound card is stereo, try playing with headphones on. Reverse the headphones so that left becomes right. |

[8-5] Why might the Intro and End animations appear choppy? |
The Intro and End digital movies were designed to run at 640X480 resolution and 256 color depth. Set your monitors to these settings. For smoothest performance run the half-screen videos. If choppiness persists then consider installing more video RAM. |

CHAPTER [9]: MISCELLANEOUS QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS |
Q: What if I don't have a computer? Can I get money for the CD-ROM? |
A: The CD-ROM has NO CASH VALUE. |
Q: I put the disk in my CD player. Why doesn't it work? |
A: It is a CD-ROM only; it doesn't work in audio CD players. |
Q: What is ChexQuest, and what is America Online? |
A: ChexQuest is a game that comes free in Chex cereals. America Online is an online service that you pay a monthly fee for. With it, you can send and receive electronic mail, get on the World Wide Web and search the Internet. |
Q: I don't have a computer. What can I do with the disk? |
A: Give it to a friend who does, or use the disk as a groovy drink coaster. |
Q: Can I get this product on floppy disks? I don't have a CD-ROM. |
A: No. The entire ChexQuest product and other material on the CD-ROM would take up more than 100 floppy disks! It would take hours to install, over $100 to duplicate and be expensive to ship! |
Q: Where was this thing tested? It doesn't work on my computer. |
A: The product was tested by a professional software testing organization. If you have problems running ChexQuest on your machine, it is most likely due to problems with Windows 3.x. Check the other Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) for more information. |
Q: The Sound Card Setup information confuses me. What should I do? |
A: The setup utility seems confusing but can usually configure itself. Just press the ENTER key on your keyboard to accept the default items until it goes away. |
